Private company paid by CMS on a contingency-fee basis to identify and recover improper Medicare fee-for-service payments, both overpayments and underpayments. RACs review claims through automated data analysis and medical record requests.
Example: RAC requested 40 charts for short-stay inpatient admissions.
The Recovery Audit Program began as a demonstration under the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act, was made permanent by law in 2006 and expanded nationwide by 2010. Hospitals have overturned many RAC denials on appeal. State Medicaid programs run similar recovery audit programs.
2. Reservation Against Cancellation

Indian Railways booking status that lets a passenger board and travel with a shared seat, typically half of a side lower berth, while waiting for a full berth to free up through cancellations. RAC is better than a waiting-list ticket.
Example: My ticket was RAC 4, so I shared a side berth until the TTE gave me a full one after Nagpur.
RAC passengers are allotted a berth by the traveling ticket examiner (TTE) if confirmed passengers cancel or do not show up. Two RAC passengers share one side lower berth at night. The status progresses from waiting list to RAC to confirmed as cancellations occur.
