1. Optical image stabilization

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

System that physically moves a lens element or the sensor to counteract hand shake, using gyroscope data, producing sharper photos at slow shutter speeds and steadier video. Most mid-range and flagship phones and many camera lenses include it.

Example: Thanks to OIS, the night photo came out sharp even at a half-second exposure.

Canon released the first image-stabilized interchangeable lens in 1995; Nikon calls its version VR (vibration reduction) and Sony uses OSS. In-body image stabilization (IBIS) moves the sensor instead of lens elements. Nokia's Lumia 920 (2012) helped popularize OIS in phones. OIS works on any shot, unlike software stabilization, which crops the frame.

2. Officer-involved shooting

Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations

Incident in which a police officer fires a weapon at a person, whether or not anyone is hit. OIS cases are usually reviewed by a specialized unit, prosecutors or an outside agency.

Example: The state bureau of investigation will handle the OIS investigation, per department policy.

Critics argue the phrase is passive and obscures who fired. Many agencies release video and preliminary details within days of an OIS. Databases maintained by news organizations count about 1,000 fatal police shootings a year in the US.

3. Overnight index swap

Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations

Interest rate swap in which one party pays a fixed rate and the other pays a floating rate compounded from an overnight benchmark, such as SOFR, SONIA or €STR, over the swap's term. OIS rates reveal market expectations for central bank policy rates.

Example: OIS pricing implies traders expect two quarter-point cuts by year-end.

The spread between LIBOR and OIS was a widely watched gauge of bank stress during the 2008 crisis. With LIBOR retired, swaps referencing overnight risk-free rates have become the core of the swap market. OIS curves are also used to discount collateralized derivative cash flows.
