NTSC stands for National Television System Committee, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Analog color television standard used in North America, Japan, South Korea and parts of South America, with 525 lines at about 30 (29.97) frames per second. The name also labels game consoles and DVDs made for those regions.

Example: My imported Japanese console outputs NTSC, so it needs a TV that accepts 60 Hz signals.

Usage notes

The committee defined the black-and-white standard in 1941 and a compatible color system in 1953; color subtly reduced the frame rate to 29.97 to avoid interference. Engineers joked that NTSC meant "Never The Same Color" because of hue errors. US full-power stations ended NTSC broadcasts in 2009, replaced by ATSC digital TV.
