CategoriesTechnology & Computing

OLED stands for Organic light-emitting diode, a consumer electronics abbreviation also used in science.

Display technology in which each pixel is made of organic compounds that emit their own light, so pixels can switch off completely for perfect black and extreme contrast, without any backlight. It is used in premium TVs, smartphones, smartwatches, laptops and monitors.

Example: The OLED TV makes dark movie scenes look amazing because black areas are truly off.

Usage notes

Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke built the first practical OLED at Eastman Kodak in 1987. Sony sold the first OLED TV, the 11-inch XEL-1, in 2007, and LG Display later scaled the technology to large TVs. Apple's first OLED iPhone was the iPhone X (2017). OLED risks permanent burn-in from static images, such as news tickers, and is usually less bright than the best LCDs. Pronounced "OH-led".
