Mini-LED stands for Mini light-emitting diode backlight, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
LCD backlight technology using thousands of tiny LEDs grouped into hundreds or thousands of local dimming zones, giving deeper blacks, higher brightness and better HDR than standard LED backlights.
Example: The Mini-LED TV hits 2,000 nits, but you can see slight blooming around subtitles.
Usage notes
TCL launched the first Mini-LED TV in 2019, and Apple used Mini-LED in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro in 2021 under the name Liquid Retina XDR. Because dimming zones are still larger than pixels, bright objects on black backgrounds can show halos, called blooming. Mini-LED avoids the burn-in risk of OLED.
