1. Virtual reality

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

Computer-generated, immersive 3D environment experienced through a headset that tracks head movements, replacing the user's view of the real world. It is used for games, training, design, therapy and social apps.

Example: She tried a VR rollercoaster demo and had to sit down afterward.

Ivan Sutherland built an early head-mounted display, nicknamed the "Sword of Damocles", in 1968, and Jaron Lanier popularized the term "virtual reality" in the 1980s. The modern wave began with the Oculus Rift Kickstarter in 2012; Facebook bought Oculus for about 2 billion dollars in 2014. Standalone headsets such as Meta Quest need no PC. Motion sickness affects some users.

2. Rotation speed

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Speed at which the pilot raises the nosewheel to lift the aircraft off the runway, called "rotate" by the monitoring pilot. VR equals or slightly exceeds V1 and is chosen so the aircraft reaches V2 by 35 feet above the runway even with an engine failed.

Example: On the heavy 777 departure, VR came at 152 knots and the captain eased back on the yoke.

Rotating early can cause a tail strike or excess drag, while rotating late wastes runway. Manuals print the R as a subscript, but cockpit displays and checklists use plain "VR." In technology the same letters mean virtual reality, an unrelated meaning.
