Software distributed with its source code under a license that permits use, modification and redistribution, meeting the Open Source Definition maintained by the Open Source Initiative. Much of the internet's infrastructure, from web servers to databases, is OSS.
Example: Our compliance team audits every OSS dependency for license obligations before release.
Christine Peterson suggested the term "open source" in February 1998, shortly after Netscape announced it would release its browser code. "Source-available" licenses that restrict commercial use, such as the Business Source License, do not qualify as OSS under the OSI definition. In telecommunications, OSS also means operations support systems.
2. One-Stop Shop
