1. Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Act of Parliament governing police powers in England and Wales, including stop and search, arrest, detention, interviews and the treatment of suspects in custody. Its codes of practice set detailed rules officers must follow.
Example: Under PACE, a suspect can normally be held for 24 hours before being charged or released.
Passed after scandals and the Royal Commission on Criminal Procedure. Custody time limits can be extended to 36 hours by a senior officer and up to 96 hours with court approval. Interviews must be recorded, and breaches of the codes can lead to evidence being excluded. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate legislation.
2. Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Medicare and Medicaid program providing comprehensive medical and social services to frail older adults who qualify for nursing home care but can live safely in the community. A PACE organization delivers and coordinates all care, often through an adult day health center.

Participants must be 55 or older and live in a PACE service area. The model grew from On Lok in San Francisco in the 1970s and became a permanent Medicare benefit under the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Most participants are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.
