NIBRS stands for National Incident-Based Reporting System, a police abbreviation.
FBI crime-reporting standard that records details of each incident, including all offenses, victims, offenders, property and arrests, rather than summary counts. It became the national standard on January 1, 2021.
Example: Our department converted to NIBRS, so this year's numbers aren't directly comparable with the old UCR data.
Usage notes
Pronounced "NYE-burz." NIBRS captures far more detail, such as the relationship between victims and offenders. Many large agencies were slow to convert, leaving gaps in 2021 national data. It covers dozens of offense categories compared with eight in the old summary system.
