1. National Crime Agency

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations

UK law enforcement agency that leads the fight against serious and organized crime, including drug and firearms trafficking, people smuggling, cybercrime, money laundering and child sexual exploitation. Its officers can hold police powers.

Example: NCA officers arrested five people over a people-smuggling network operating across the Channel.

Launched in October 2013 to replace the Serious Organised Crime Agency, it is sometimes compared to the FBI. It includes the Child Exploitation and Online Protection command (CEOP) and the National Cyber Crime Unit. It operates in England and Wales and, with agreed arrangements, in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

2. Nickel cobalt aluminum (oxide)

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Lithium-ion cathode chemistry of nickel, cobalt and aluminum oxides, offering high energy density. It is closely associated with Panasonic cells used in Tesla vehicles, including the original Model S.

Example: Cylindrical NCA cells from Panasonic powered the early long-range Tesla models.

NCA shares the high-nickel approach of NMC but substitutes aluminum for manganese to improve stability. Like other nickel-rich chemistries, it delivers long range at the cost of shorter cycle life than LFP. The chemistry is less common than NMC outside Tesla's supply chain.

3. Noncompete agreement

Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations

Agreement in which an employee or a business seller promises not to compete with the employer or buyer for a set period within a defined area or market after the relationship ends. Enforceability varies widely by state and generally requires a reasonable scope and a legitimate business interest.

Example: His NCA bars him from working for a competing payroll firm in Texas for 12 months.

California voids most employee noncompetes under Business and Professions Code § 16600, and Minnesota, North Dakota and Oklahoma also ban most of them. An FTC rule issued in 2024 to ban most noncompetes nationwide was set aside by a federal court and never took effect. Noncompetes given in the sale of a business are enforced more readily.

4. National Cemetery Administration

Military · Veteran Abbreviations

Branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs that operates more than 150 national cemeteries and provides headstones, markers and burial benefits for eligible veterans and family members.

Example: The NCA approved a government headstone for my grandfather's grave.

Arlington National Cemetery is run by the Army, not the NCA. Eligible veterans can be buried in a national cemetery at no cost, with a grave liner, headstone and perpetual care. Presidential Memorial Certificates are also issued to next of kin.
