1. National Health Service

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations

Publicly funded health care system of the United Kingdom, providing hospital, GP, mental health and emergency care largely free at the point of use, financed mainly through general taxation. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each run their own health services.

Example: He waited 14 weeks for an NHS appointment with a dermatologist.

Health Minister Aneurin Bevan launched the NHS on July 5, 1948. With well over a million staff in England alone, it is among the largest employers in the world. Prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland but carry a charge for many adults in England. Northern Ireland's system is formally called Health and Social Care (HSC).

2. National Honor Society

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Honor society for high school students, founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, that selects members based on scholarship, service, leadership and character. Members typically complete service hours and wear honor cords at graduation.

Example: You need a 3.5 GPA and 20 service hours to be considered for NHS.

Each chapter sets its own GPA cutoff and selection process using faculty councils. The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), founded in 1929, serves middle schools. In Britain, NHS means the National Health Service, an entirely different meaning.

3. National Historic Site

Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations

Designation for places of national historical significance in the United States and Canada, managed in the US by the National Park Service and in Canada largely by Parks Canada.

Example: Fort Langley NHS in British Columbia reenacts the fur trade era.

NHS far more often means the UK's National Health Service. Canada has nearly 1,000 national historic sites.
