1. Monetary Policy Committee
Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations · also used in business
Nine-member committee of the Bank of England that sets Bank Rate, the UK's main interest rate, and decides on bond purchases or sales. It meets eight times a year and publishes how each member voted.
Example: The MPC voted 5-4 to hold rates, with four members favoring a cut.
It was created in 1997 when the Bank gained independence. Members are the Governor, three Deputy Governors, the Chief Economist and four external experts appointed by the Chancellor. If inflation strays more than one percentage point from target, the Governor must write an open letter explaining why.
2. Megaparsec (Mpc)
Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations
One million parsecs, about 3.26 million light-years, the standard unit for distances between galaxies and for the expansion rate of the universe. The Andromeda Galaxy is about 0.77 Mpc away, and the Virgo Cluster about 16.5 Mpc.
Example: Local measurements give a Hubble constant near 73 km/s/Mpc, higher than the 67 inferred from the cosmic microwave background.
The Hubble constant is expressed in kilometers per second per megaparsec: each megaparsec of distance adds that much to a galaxy's recession speed. The disagreement between the two measured values is known as the Hubble tension. In the same field, MPC stands for the Minor Planet Center.
3. Marginal propensity to consume
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Share of an additional dollar of income that a household spends on consumption rather than saves. If the MPC is 0.8, a $100 rise in income leads to $80 of extra spending.
Example: Because low-income households have a high MPC, stimulus checks aimed at them boost spending more.
John Maynard Keynes introduced the concept in his 1936 General Theory. MPC and the marginal propensity to save (MPS) add up to one, and in simple Keynesian models the spending multiplier equals 1 divided by 1 minus MPC. In central banking, MPC refers to a Monetary Policy Committee.
4. Model Penal Code
Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations
Model criminal code published by the American Law Institute in 1962 to bring consistency and clarity to American criminal law. Many states rewrote their criminal codes based on it, and law schools teach criminal law largely through its provisions.
Example: Under MPC § 2.02, a person acts recklessly by consciously disregarding a substantial and unjustifiable risk.
Its most influential feature is its hierarchy of culpable mental states: purposely, knowingly, recklessly and negligently. It also shaped modern definitions of attempt, conspiracy and justification defenses. The codes of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania drew heavily on it, and the ALI approved revised sentencing provisions in 2017.
5. Music Production Center
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
Line of sampling drum machines and production workstations made by Akai, played by tapping velocity-sensitive pads. The MPC shaped the sound of hip-hop production from the late 1980s onward.
Example: J Dilla's off-grid drums were programmed on an MPC.
The MPC60 of 1988, designed with Roger Linn, was originally called the MIDI Production Center. Producers such as J Dilla, Pete Rock and Kanye West built careers on MPCs. Modern models run standalone or with computer software.
6. Minor Planet Center
Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations
Official clearinghouse for observations and orbits of asteroids, comets and other small bodies, operating under the International Astronomical Union at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Observatories worldwide report positions to the MPC, which assigns designations and publishes orbits.
Example: The MPC issued an electronic circular announcing the newly discovered near-Earth asteroid.
Founded in 1947 at the University of Cincinnati, the center moved to Cambridge in 1978. It processes millions of observations each year, a number rising rapidly with new surveys such as Rubin. Not to be confused with Mpc, the megaparsec.
7. Multi-party computation
Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations
A cryptographic technique in which several parties jointly compute a result, such as a transaction signature, without any of them revealing its secret input. MPC wallets split a private key into shares held on different devices or servers.
Example: Our treasury uses an MPC wallet, so no single employee or server ever holds the whole key.
Secure multi-party computation dates to Andrew Yao's work in the early 1980s. In crypto custody it competes with multisignature wallets, offering similar protection without on-chain complexity, and providers such as Fireblocks popularized it among institutions. Threshold signature schemes are a common implementation.
