1. Miles per gallon equivalent
Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations · also used in science
An EPA efficiency rating for electric and plug-in vehicles that treats 33.7 kWh of electricity as equal to the energy in one gallon of gasoline. Many EVs are rated above 100 MPGe.
Example: The compact EV earns an EPA rating of 120 MPGe combined.
The rating lets shoppers compare EVs with gasoline cars on one scale but says nothing about electricity cost. EPA labels also show kWh per 100 miles, a more practical figure for EV owners; 33.7 kWh/100 mi corresponds to 100 MPGe. The metric first appeared on window stickers around 2010.
2. Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
EPA efficiency rating for electric and plug-in vehicles, showing how far a vehicle travels on the amount of electricity containing the same energy as one gallon of gasoline, defined as 33.7 kilowatt-hours.
Example: The compact EV is rated 120 MPGe, roughly four times as efficient as a 30-mpg gas car.
Introduced on US window stickers in 2011. Critics note that MPGe compares energy content, not cost, so the sticker also shows kilowatt-hours per 100 miles and estimated annual fuel cost. A vehicle rated 100 MPGe uses 33.7 kWh per 100 miles.
