NiMH stands for Nickel-metal hydride, an energy abbreviation.
Rechargeable battery chemistry using a nickel oxyhydroxide positive electrode and a hydrogen-absorbing metal alloy negative electrode. NiMH cells are common as AA and AAA rechargeables and powered most hybrid cars for decades, including the Toyota Prius.
Example: These NiMH AA cells hold 2,000 mAh and can be recharged hundreds of times.
Usage notes
NiMH batteries were commercialized around 1989 as a less toxic replacement for nickel-cadmium. Cells deliver about 1.2 volts, a little less than alkaline cells' 1.5 volts, but most devices work fine. Low-self-discharge versions, introduced with Sanyo's Eneloop in 2005, keep their charge for months.
