1. Molten salt reactor
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
Nuclear reactor that uses molten fluoride or chloride salts as coolant, often with fuel dissolved directly in the salt. MSRs operate at high temperatures but near atmospheric pressure, and some designs aim to use thorium or burn nuclear waste.
Example: The startup's MSR design keeps fuel dissolved in salt that can drain into tanks if power is lost.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment ran from 1965 to 1969. China has built an experimental thorium-fueled MSR in the Gobi Desert. Challenges include corrosion of materials by hot salts and handling radioactive fission products in the liquid fuel.
2. Main supply route
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Primary road designated for moving supplies and troops in an area of operations, kept open and patrolled because convoys depend on it. Military police and engineers help keep the route open.
Example: The convoy was delayed after an IED was found on MSR Tampa.
In Iraq, MSRs received code names such as Tampa, Michigan and Irish. Alternate supply routes (ASRs) are designated as backups. Route clearance units swept MSRs for roadside bombs daily. Convoys on MSRs were the most frequent targets of roadside bombs in Iraq.
