OCGT stands for Open-cycle gas turbine, an energy abbreviation.
Power plant consisting of a gas turbine alone, without heat recovery, also called a simple-cycle plant. OCGTs are less efficient than combined-cycle plants, roughly 35-40%, but cheaper to build and able to start within minutes, so they serve as "peakers" during demand spikes.
Example: Two OCGT units fired up when demand peaked during the heat wave.
Usage notes
Many peakers use aeroderivative turbines adapted from jet engines. Because they run only a few hundred hours a year, their cost per kilowatt-hour is high. Large batteries increasingly compete with OCGTs for short peak-demand periods.
