1. Pediatric emergency medicine

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Subspecialty focused on the emergency care of infants, children and adolescents, practiced in children's hospital emergency departments and pediatric areas of general EDs.

Example: PEM attending reviewed the febrile neonate workup; LP and admission recommended.

Physicians reach PEM through pediatrics or emergency medicine residency followed by a fellowship, with board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics or American Board of Emergency Medicine. Most children in the US are still seen in general emergency departments, which is why pediatric readiness programs exist.

2. Proton exchange membrane

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Thin polymer membrane that conducts protons but blocks electrons and gases, the heart of PEM fuel cells in hydrogen cars and of PEM electrolyzers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. PEM devices operate at about 80 °C and respond quickly to changing power.

Example: The 10 MW PEM electrolyzer runs on surplus wind power to produce green hydrogen.

Also expanded as polymer electrolyte membrane. The most common membrane material, Nafion, was developed by DuPont in the 1960s, and General Electric supplied PEM fuel cells for NASA's Gemini missions. PEM technology relies on platinum and, in electrolyzers, iridium, scarce metals that drive research into alternatives.
