glTF stands for GL Transmission Format, a file format abbreviation.
Royalty-free 3D format from the Khronos Group designed for efficient transmission and loading of 3D scenes and models in apps, games and web browsers, supporting physically based materials and animation. It is nicknamed "the JPEG of 3D".
Example: The product viewer loads a GLB version of the glTF model, so shoppers can rotate it in the browser.
Usage notes
Khronos released glTF 1.0 in 2015 and 2.0 in 2017, and it became ISO/IEC 12113 in 2022. Files come as .gltf (JSON plus separate resources) or .glb (a single binary package). Web libraries such as three.js and Babylon.js, and AR viewers, rely on it. Khronos also maintains OpenGL and Vulkan, hence the "GL".
