1. General ledger

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations

Master set of accounts in which all of a company's financial transactions are recorded, organized by the chart of accounts and summarizing activity from subledgers such as payables, receivables and fixed assets. Financial statements are prepared from GL balances.

Example: Post the accrual to GL account 2150 before the period closes on Friday.

In double-entry bookkeeping every GL entry has equal debits and credits. Modern ERP systems hold the GL electronically, but the term dates from bound ledger books. A "GL code" is the account number to which an expense or revenue item is charged.

2. General liability insurance

Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations

Business insurance that pays for claims that the company caused bodily injury or property damage to others, or personal and advertising injury such as libel, along with legal defense costs. Landlords and clients commonly require contractors and vendors to carry it.

Example: The venue requires a $1 million GL policy before we can book the event.

GL is usually written on the standard commercial general liability (CGL) form and limits are often expressed as $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. It does not cover employee injuries (workers' compensation), professional mistakes (E&O) or vehicles (commercial auto). In accounting, GL means general ledger.

3. Good luck

Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations

Short wish of luck before a test, match, interview or game, used in texts and online gaming. It is quick to type in the seconds before something starts, which explains its popularity in game lobbies.

Example: Gl on your driving test tomorrow, you've got this!

In gaming it usually appears inside GLHF (good luck, have fun) at the start of a match. Friendly and acceptable in casual work chat. The letters also mean general ledger in accounting, a context far removed from chat.

4. Greenland

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark with Nuuk as its capital and about 56,000 residents. The ice sheet covers about 80 percent of its surface.

Example: Expedition cargo for Nuuk, GL is shipped from Aalborg in Denmark.

Google used the .gl domain for its goo.gl link shortener. Greenland left the European Community in 1985. The language code gl is Galician, spoken in northwest Spain.

5. Girls' love

Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations

Genre of romance fiction centered on relationships between female characters, also called yuri in Japanese manga and anime fandom. It spans manga, light novels, webtoons and live-action dramas.

Example: Looking for a good GL webtoon with a happy ending.

Thai GL dramas gained international popularity in the 2020s alongside BL, and Japanese yuri has a long history in manga and anime. Fans use GL as a search tag on webtoon and streaming platforms. In gaming chat, lowercase gl means "good luck," a context that rarely overlaps.
