FBX stands for Filmbox, a file format abbreviation.
Proprietary 3D asset exchange format owned by Autodesk, storing models, materials, skeletons, animation and cameras. It is widely used to move assets between tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, Unity and Unreal Engine.
Example: The animator exported the character rig and walk cycle as an FBX for Unreal.
Usage notes
The format originated with Kaydara's Filmbox motion-capture software in the 1990s; Autodesk acquired Kaydara in 2006. Its specification is not fully public, so open-source support relies on reverse engineering and Autodesk's SDK. Open alternatives include glTF for real-time delivery and USD for large production pipelines.
