1. gzip compressed file
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
File compressed with gzip, a free tool created in 1992 by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler for the GNU Project using the DEFLATE algorithm. It compresses single files, so it is usually paired with TAR as .tar.gz or .tgz.
Example: The log archive is a GZ file, so run gunzip before opening it in the editor.
Gzip was written to replace the Unix compress tool, whose LZW algorithm was patented. Its compression is the same DEFLATE used in ZIP and PNG, and the companion zlib library by the same authors is embedded in countless programs. Web servers use gzip to compress pages in transit. Newer tools such as zstd and xz compress faster or smaller.
2. Congratulations (grats)
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Short congratulations typed when another player reaches a milestone, such as leveling up, finding rare loot or finishing a quest. Common in MMORPGs like RuneScape and World of Warcraft.
Example: Gz on the 99 Cooking, that grind took forever!
Also written "grats" or "gratz." In RuneScape, public chat often fills with "gz" when a player hits a rare drop or maximum level. Friendly and supportive; sarcastic use is uncommon.
