GPX stands for GPS Exchange Format, a file format abbreviation.
XML-based format for GPS data, storing waypoints, routes and recorded tracks with coordinates, elevation and time. Fitness apps, cycling computers, hiking apps and mapping tools import and export it.
Example: Download the race course as a GPX and load it onto your bike computer.
Usage notes
GPX was released in 2002 by TopoGrafix and became the most widely supported format for exchanging GPS tracks among Garmin devices, Strava, Komoot and OpenStreetMap. Extensions add data such as heart rate, cadence and temperature. Sharing GPX files of runs that start at home can reveal one's address, so many apps offer privacy zones.
