JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, a file format abbreviation.
Lossy image compression standard and file format used for most digital photographs, on cameras, phones and websites. It shrinks files dramatically by discarding detail the eye barely notices, with an adjustable quality setting.
Example: Export the photos as JPEG at 85 percent quality to keep the files under 1 MB each.
Usage notes
The name comes from the committee, formed in 1986 by ISO and the CCITT (now ITU-T), that published the standard in 1992. JPEG compresses 8-by-8-pixel blocks with the discrete cosine transform; heavy compression produces blocky "artifacts", and each re-save loses more quality. It supports no transparency. Pronounced "JAY-peg". Successors such as JPEG 2000 and JPEG XL never displaced it.
