H.265 stands for ITU-T H.265 video coding standard, a file format abbreviation.
Video compression standard, also called HEVC, that delivers similar quality to H.264 at roughly half the bit rate. It is used for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, 4K streaming, satellite broadcasting and iPhone videos.
Example: Record in H.265 to fit twice as much 4K footage on the card.
Usage notes
ITU-T approved H.265 in 2013. Several competing patent pools and unclear royalty terms slowed its adoption on the web, encouraging the royalty-free AV1 alternative. Hardware decoding is built into modern GPUs, TVs and phones, but editing H.265 on older computers can be sluggish. Its successor, H.266 (VVC), followed in 2020.
