FLV stands for Flash Video, a file format abbreviation.

Video container format used by Adobe Flash Player, which powered most online video in the late 2000s, including YouTube at its 2005 launch. Files typically held H.263-based Sorenson Spark or later H.264 video.

Example: The archived 2007 web series exists only as FLV files, which modern browsers can't play.

Usage notes

Flash Video dominated web video because Flash Player was installed on most PCs. Apple's refusal to support Flash on the iPhone and the rise of HTML5 video led to its decline, and Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020. Media players such as VLC still open FLV files, and the format persisted for some live streaming.
