EXIF stands for Exchangeable image file format, a file format abbreviation.
Metadata standard embedded in photos by cameras and phones, recording details such as camera model, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, date, orientation and often GPS location.
Example: Strip the EXIF data before posting the photo, or the GPS coordinates will reveal your home.
Usage notes
The Japan Electronic Industries Development Association published EXIF in 1995; it is now maintained by Japanese industry groups CIPA and JEITA. Many social networks remove EXIF data on upload, but email attachments and file-sharing services often keep it. In 2012 metadata in a published photo revealed the location of fugitive software entrepreneur John McAfee in Guatemala. Pronounced "EGG-zif".
