1. Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Russia's main domestic security agency, responsible for counterintelligence, counterterrorism, border security and surveillance, and widely reported to conduct operations abroad. It is headquartered in the Lubyanka building in Moscow.
Example: The FSB said it had detained a man accused of spying for a foreign intelligence service.
Formed in 1995 as a successor to the domestic directorates of the Soviet KGB, it absorbed the border guard service in 2003. Vladimir Putin served as its director in 1998 and 1999 before becoming prime minister. In international finance, FSB means the Financial Stability Board.
2. Financial Stability Board
Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations
International body that monitors the global financial system and coordinates financial regulation among G20 countries, standard-setting bodies and international organizations. Its secretariat is hosted by the BIS in Basel.
Example: The FSB published its annual list of global systemically important banks.
It was created by the G20 in 2009, after the financial crisis, replacing the Financial Stability Forum founded in 1999. Its recommendations are not legally binding but are implemented through national rules. In Russia, FSB refers to the Federal Security Service.
3. Front-side bus
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Shared connection that linked the processor to the northbridge chipset and main memory in PCs of the 1990s and 2000s. FSB speed, such as 800 or 1333 MHz, was a headline specification and a common overclocking target.
Example: My old Core 2 Duo system ran a 1333 MHz FSB, which I pushed to 1600 for a free speed boost.
Intel's FSB was "quad-pumped", transferring data four times per clock cycle, so a 333 MHz clock was marketed as 1333. AMD moved the memory controller onto the processor with the Athlon 64 in 2003, and Intel replaced the FSB with QuickPath Interconnect and DMI from 2008. Modern systems no longer have a front-side bus.
