1. Fianna Fáil
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
One of Ireland's two historically dominant parties, broadly centrist, founded in 1926 by Éamon de Valera. It has led more Irish governments than any other party and has governed in coalition with Fine Gael since 2020.
Example: FF emerged as the largest party after the count in every Dublin constituency but one.
Its name is usually translated as "Soldiers of Destiny". It and Fine Gael originated on opposite sides of the 1922-1923 Civil War, and they are still called the "Civil War parties". It was the largest party in the Dáil after the 2024 general election.
2. Firefighter
Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations
Abbreviation for a firefighter, used in rosters, reports, certification titles and before names, as in "FF Johnson." Certification levels are often written FF1 and FF2.
Example: Two FFs were treated for heat exhaustion after the warehouse fire.
Certification levels follow NFPA 1001, with Firefighter I covering basic skills under supervision and Firefighter II adding more independent tasks. Ranks above firefighter include engineer or driver, lieutenant and captain. In texting, FF can mean "follow Friday," and in Irish politics it means Fianna Fáil.
3. Forfeit (surrender)
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Calls for a team to surrender a match early, especially in League of Legends, where "/ff" starts a surrender vote. Typed as "ff," "ff 15" or "gg ff."
Example: We're down 20 kills and three inhibitors, just ff.
"Ff 15" urges teammates to surrender as soon as the game allows. Calling for an early forfeit is often considered defeatist, since comebacks are possible. Outside gaming, FF means Final Fantasy to many players, and Follow Friday on Twitter, so context matters.
4. Freight forwarder
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Company that arranges the transport of goods on behalf of shippers, booking space with carriers, preparing documents, consolidating cargo and often handling customs clearance and insurance, without necessarily owning trucks, ships or planes.
Example: Our FF consolidates three suppliers' cargo into one container.
The global trade body is FIATA, founded in 1926. Forwarders may act as agents or as principals issuing their own transport documents.
5. Fan fiction
Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations
Fiction written by fans using characters and settings from an existing work, such as a book, film, TV series, game or band. Also called "fanfic" or simply "fic."
Example: Stayed up until 3 a.m. reading FF about the side characters.
Fan fiction long predates the internet, with Star Trek fanzines of the 1960s and 1970s a famous example. Online archives such as FanFiction.Net and AO3 made it a mass hobby. In gaming FF often means Final Fantasy, forfeit or friendly fire, so context matters.
6. Follow Friday
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Twitter tradition of recommending accounts worth following every Friday, using the hashtag #FF or #FollowFriday. Users list handles of friends, experts or favorite creators.
Example: #FF to these three climate scientists who explain the news so clearly.
One of the earliest Twitter hashtag traditions, dating to early 2009. It faded as algorithmic feeds replaced chronological timelines. In gaming FF means forfeit or friendly fire, and in parenting forums formula feeding, so context matters.
7. Formula feeding
Texting & Internet Slang · Parenting Forum Abbreviations
Feeding a baby infant formula from a bottle, either exclusively or combined with breast milk, as in "we FF from birth" or "switched to FF at four months."
Example: We switched to FF at four months and everyone in the house is sleeping better.
Feeding choices can be emotional, and many parenting forums ban "breast versus formula" arguments to keep threads supportive. FF is also used on Twitter for Follow Friday and in gaming for forfeit or friendly fire, contexts that do not overlap with infant care.
8. Friendly fire
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Damage that players can inflict on their own teammates, a setting in shooters and tactical games. "FF on" means teammates can hurt each other; "FF off" prevents it.
Example: FF is on in this mode, so watch where you throw grenades.
Realistic tactical shooters such as Counter-Strike and Arma use friendly fire to reward careful play. Many casual games disable it to prevent griefing. In real military usage, "friendly fire" refers to attacks on one's own forces, and that sense inspired the game term.
9. And the following (pages) (ff.)
Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations
Indicates that a reference continues on the following pages or lines, as in "pp. 45ff." It is used when a discussion begins on one page and runs on without a clear end.
Example: The author returns to the theme of exile on pp. 112ff., in the book's final chapter.
The single form f. means "and the following page." Modern style guides discourage ff. in favor of exact page ranges, which tell readers precisely where to look. It may also be the plural of fol. (folios). Spacing varies: 45ff. and 45 ff. are both found.
10. Forced fumble
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Defensive statistic credited to the player who causes a ball carrier to fumble by punching, stripping or hitting the ball loose. Forced fumbles count whether or not the defense recovers the ball.
Example: The linebacker had nine tackles, a sack and an FF on the opening drive.
Charles "Peanut" Tillman made the "Peanut Punch" famous, forcing four fumbles in a single game in 2012. Fumble recoveries are tracked separately as FR. Coaches drill "tackle and rip" techniques specifically to create forced fumbles.
11. Fortissimo (ff)
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
Dynamic marking meaning very loud, stronger than forte. Composers use it for climaxes, and marks such as fff indicate even greater intensity.
Example: The finale ends ff with full orchestra and timpani roll.
Italian for "very strong". Late Romantic composers often wrote extreme dynamics such as ffff. In typography ff can also mean "following pages", as in "pp. 12 ff.", an unrelated meaning.
12. Finish-to-finish
Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations
Dependency in which the successor activity cannot finish until the predecessor finishes, as when final inspection cannot end before the last installation work ends.
Example: Documentation has an FF link to testing, since the final report waits for the last test.
In scheduling, FF can also mean free float, so context matters.
