Degenerative disease of the macula, the center of the retina, and the leading cause of severe central vision loss in older adults in developed countries. The dry form progresses slowly and can end in geographic atrophy; the wet form involves leaking new blood vessels and can cause rapid vision loss.

Yellow deposits under the retina called drusen are the earliest sign. Wet AMD is treated with anti-VEGF injections, which transformed outcomes after 2006. In 2023 the FDA approved the first two treatments for geographic atrophy, pegcetacoplan and avacincaptad pegol. Smoking is the strongest modifiable risk factor. Patients monitor central vision at home with an Amsler grid.
