GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation, a world government abbreviation.

Example: Under the GDPR, the company must report a data breach to regulators within 72 hours.

Usage notes

Adopted in 2016, it applied from May 25, 2018, which is when cookie consent banners proliferated. It applies to organizations outside the EU that offer goods or services to people in the EU. The largest fine so far, 1.2 billion euros against Meta in 2023, was issued by Ireland's Data Protection Commission. The UK retained a version called the UK GDPR.
