HECS stands for Higher Education Contribution Scheme, a world government abbreviation.
Australian income-contingent loan scheme for university fees, now formally HECS-HELP, under which students repay the government through the tax system once their income passes a threshold. Debts are indexed rather than charged interest.
Example: She will start repaying her HECS once her salary passes the threshold.
Usage notes
Introduced in 1989, it inspired similar schemes in other countries, including England's student loans. Indexation spikes in 2023 prompted reforms, and a 2025 law cut outstanding student debts by 20 percent. Australians still widely call any student debt "HECS".
