1. Fibrin degradation products
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Fragments released when plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen, measured in the workup of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and other states of simultaneous clotting and clot breakdown. High levels interfere with fibrin polymerization and can themselves prolong clotting tests.
Example: DIC panel: Plt 54K, fibrinogen 90, FDP greater than 40, schistocytes on smear.
Also called fibrin split products (FSP). The D-dimer assay, which detects one specific fragment of cross-linked fibrin, has largely replaced the broader FDP test in daily practice, particularly for excluding venous thromboembolism. FDPs are cleared by the liver, so liver disease can raise them independently of clotting activity.
2. Free Democratic Party
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
German liberal party that favors free markets, lower taxes and civil liberties. For decades it was a frequent kingmaker in coalitions with either the CDU/CSU or the SPD.
Example: The FDP fell short of the 5 percent threshold and lost all its Bundestag seats.
Founded in 1948, it has been a junior partner in many federal governments since 1949. It left the "traffic light" coalition with the SPD and Greens in November 2024, triggering an early election, and then failed to reach the threshold in February 2025, as it had in 2013. Its color is yellow.
