1. For real
Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations
Expresses agreement, sincerity or emphasis, as in "this song is fire fr" or a lone "fr" meaning "seriously, I agree." Also used as a question, "fr?", to ask if something is true.
Example: That exam was impossible fr, I barely finished half.
From African American Vernacular English, where "for real" is a common intensifier. Doubled as FRFR for extra emphasis. On Facebook, FR can mean "friend request," and in geography it is the code for France, contexts that make the slang reading clear. Too casual for professional use.
2. Ryanair
Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations
Europe's largest airline by passengers, an Irish low-cost carrier headquartered in Dublin and known for very low fares, a Boeing 737-only fleet and extensive fees. It flies to more than 200 airports across Europe and North Africa.
Example: My Ryanair FR 1234 to Beauvais was 15 euros, but the bus into Paris was another 17.
ICAO code RYR; callsign "Ryanair." Founded in 1984 by the Ryan family, it was rebuilt on the Southwest Airlines model under chief executive Michael O'Leary in the 1990s. It favors secondary airports with low fees, such as Charleroi for Brussels. Group airlines include Buzz, Lauda Europe and Malta Air.
3. Father (Fr.)
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
Title for Catholic and Orthodox priests and for priests in some Anglican and Lutheran traditions, used in speech and writing before the priest's name, as in "Fr. Michael Lewis". It reflects the idea of spiritual fatherhood toward a congregation.
Example: Fr. Tom will celebrate the 10 a.m. Mass this Sunday.
AP style prefers "the Rev." on first reference and reserves "Father" for direct quotations, while many Catholic publications use Fr. British writing often omits the period (Fr). Members of some religious orders combine the title with post-nominals, as in "Fr. James Martin, SJ".
4. France
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
France's code, alpha-3 FRA, prefixes French VAT numbers and the .fr domain; Paris is the capital. The French Republic also includes overseas regions such as Guadeloupe and Réunion, which have their own codes.
Example: French IBANs start with FR and contain 27 characters.
The vehicle sign is F. The .fr domain is managed by AFNIC. Locale tags read fr-FR for French in France and fr-CA for Canadian French.
5. Fluid restriction
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Order limiting a patient's total daily fluid intake, usually to a set volume such as 1 to 1.5 liters, in hyponatremia, heart failure, kidney failure or SIADH. Nurses share the allowance across meals, medications and the night shift.
Example: FR 1200 mL/24 hr: 600 mL days, 400 mL evenings, 200 mL nights.
Ice chips count as fluid, roughly half their volume as water. Signs at the door and a measured water jug help patients and visitors comply. Thirst and dry mouth are eased with mouth care, sugar-free gum or sucking on small frozen portions taken from the allowance.
6. Friend request
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Request to connect as friends on a social network, especially Facebook, as in "sent you an FR." Also used on gaming platforms such as Steam and Xbox.
Example: Sent you an FR on Facebook, accept it so I can tag you.
Facebook's friend requests made the term common in the late 2000s. On many platforms "follow" has replaced "friend." Among Gen Z, fr usually means "for real," so a mention of a platform signals this sense.
7. French (Fr.)
Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations
Identifies French as the source language in etymologies, glossaries and bilingual references, as in "from Fr. ballet." Modern French loans often keep French spelling and pronunciation.
Example: rendezvous (n.) from Fr. rendez-vous, literally "present yourselves"
French has been a major source of English vocabulary since the Norman Conquest, with later waves in cuisine, fashion, diplomacy and the arts. Dictionaries separate Old French (OF), Middle French (MF) and modern French. As a religious title, Fr. means Father, an unrelated abbreviation.
8. Francium (Fr)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Francium (element 87) is the most unstable of the naturally occurring elements: its longest-lived isotope, francium-223, has a half-life of about 22 minutes. No visible amount has ever existed, and physicists study it as small clouds of atoms held in laser traps.
Example: Researchers cooled Fr atoms in a laser trap to measure subtle effects of the weak nuclear force.
Marguerite Perey, a former assistant of Marie Curie, discovered francium in 1939 at the Curie Institute in Paris while studying the decay of actinium-227. Named after France, it was the last element first discovered in nature rather than made in a laboratory. Perey became the first woman elected to the French Academy of Sciences, as a corresponding member, in 1962.
9. Family room
Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations
Listing shorthand for a casual living space, often next to the kitchen, distinct from a formal living room, typical of suburban homes built from the 1950s onward.
Example: Kitchen opens to the FR with a gas fireplace.
Some listings use "den" or "great room" for similar spaces.
