ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System, a world government abbreviation.
Planned online pre-travel authorization for visitors from visa-exempt countries, such as the United States, the UK and Canada, traveling to European countries in the Schengen area. Approval is linked to a passport and valid for three years.
Example: Once ETIAS starts, you will need to apply online and pay a 20 euro fee before your trip to Spain.
Usage notes
First proposed in 2016, it was repeatedly delayed and designed to start only after the Entry/Exit System was running, with launch planned for late 2026. It is similar in concept to the US ESTA and the UK ETA. Travelers under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee.
