HAZMAT stands for Hazardous materials, an emergency services abbreviation also used in business.
Substances such as chemicals, fuels, gases and radioactive materials that can harm people, property or the environment, and the specialized teams and procedures used to deal with spills and releases. Vehicles carrying them display diamond-shaped placards with hazard classes and UN numbers.
Example: Traffic is diverted while the HAZMAT team contains a chlorine leak from the tanker truck.
Usage notes
Written HAZMAT, Hazmat or hazmat. In the US, transportation of hazardous materials is regulated by the Department of Transportation, and responders use the Emergency Response Guidebook to identify materials and isolation distances. Hazmat technicians are trained to OSHA and NFPA standards.
