1. Environmental impact statement
Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations
Detailed document required under the US National Environmental Policy Act for major federal actions that may significantly affect the environment. An EIS analyzes a proposal's impacts and reasonable alternatives and is released in draft for public comment before a final version and a Record of Decision.
Example: The draft EIS for the pipeline drew more than 200,000 public comments.
Projects with uncertain effects first undergo a shorter environmental assessment (EA), which ends either in a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) or a full EIS. The 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act set page and time limits, generally 150 pages and two years for an EIS. Delays from EIS litigation are a frequent target of permitting reform.
2. Electronic image stabilization
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Software-based stabilization that crops the video frame slightly and shifts it from frame to frame, using motion sensor data, to smooth out shaky footage. Action cameras and phones rely heavily on it.
Example: The action cam's EIS keeps the mountain-bike footage smooth even on rough trails.
Because it crops the image, EIS slightly narrows the field of view and reduces resolution. In low light, long exposures can produce motion blur that EIS cannot remove, sometimes causing a wobbly "jello" look. Many phones combine EIS with OIS in hybrid stabilization. GoPro's HyperSmooth is a well-known EIS implementation.
