DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Optical disc format for movies and data, holding 4.7 GB on a single layer or 8.5 GB on a dual layer, about seven times a CD's capacity. DVD-Video discs play standard-definition films with menus, subtitles and multiple audio tracks.
Example: We still borrow DVDs from the library for movies that aren't on any streaming service.
Usage notes
The format united rival proposals from Toshiba and from Sony and Philips in 1995, launched in Japan in 1996 and in the US in 1997, and became one of the fastest-adopted consumer formats. Originally "digital video disc", it was later promoted as "digital versatile disc". Discs carry region codes, and their CSS encryption was cracked by the DeCSS program in 1999.
