1. Emergency medical services

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

System that provides prehospital emergency care and transport, including 911 dispatch, ambulances, first responders, EMTs, paramedics and air medical services. EMS also handles transfers between facilities.

Example: EMS arrived 7 minutes after the 911 call and found the patient pulseless.

Modern US EMS grew after the 1966 National Academy of Sciences report "Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society". The first 911 call in the United States was made in Haleyville, Alabama, in 1968. EMS agencies may be fire-based, hospital-based, municipal "third service" or private.

2. Environmental management system

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Structured framework an organization uses to manage its environmental responsibilities, setting policies, tracking impacts such as waste, energy and emissions, and improving performance over time. ISO 14001 is the international standard for certifying an EMS.

Example: The plant's EMS was certified to ISO 14001 after an external audit last spring.

ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and revised in 2015, following the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. The European Union's EMAS scheme adds public reporting requirements. In medicine and public safety EMS means emergency medical services, a far more common meaning.

3. Express Mail Service

Writing & Everyday · Mail and Postal Abbreviations

Names the international express service offered by postal operators that belong to the Universal Postal Union, providing faster delivery and tracking for documents and parcels.

Example: Japan Post's EMS delivered the parcel from Osaka to Toronto in four days.

EMS is coordinated by the UPU's EMS Cooperative, and each country brands it differently; in the US it corresponds to Priority Mail Express International. It is separate from private couriers such as DHL and FedEx. In public safety, EMS means emergency medical services, the more common US meaning.
