EPD stands for Environmental product declaration, an environmental abbreviation.
Independently verified document reporting a product's environmental impacts, such as global warming potential, water use and resource depletion, based on a life-cycle assessment. EPDs let architects and buyers compare building materials like concrete, steel and insulation.
Example: The bid requires an EPD showing the concrete mix's embodied carbon in kilograms of CO2e per cubic meter.
Usage notes
EPDs follow ISO 14025 and product-specific rules called product category rules (PCRs). "Buy Clean" procurement policies in several US states and countries set maximum embodied-carbon limits verified by EPDs. Green building systems such as LEED award points for using products with EPDs.
