IUCN Red List category for species facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild, one step below Critically Endangered. Criteria include population declines of 50-70% or more over ten years or three generations, or fewer than about 2,500 mature individuals.
Example: The tiger is listed as EN, with roughly 3,700 to 5,600 left in the wild according to a 2022 assessment.
Endangered, Critically Endangered and Vulnerable together form the IUCN's "threatened" categories; more than 45,000 assessed species fall into them. The IUCN status differs from listing under national laws such as the US Endangered Species Act, which uses its own definitions.
2. Engineman
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Mechanics who operate and maintain diesel engines, reduction gears, refrigeration and air-conditioning plants and other auxiliary machinery, including the engines of small boats and landing craft.
Example: EN2 Marsh rebuilt the emergency diesel generator's fuel injectors over the weekend.
Enginemen are common on amphibious ships, patrol craft and small boats, where diesel propulsion predominates. They differ from machinist's mates (MM), who traditionally handle steam propulsion and auxiliary systems aboard larger ships, and from gas turbine technicians (GS) on destroyers and cruisers.
