CHAdeMO stands for CHAdeMO DC charging standard, an automotive abbreviation.
Japanese fast-charging standard for electric vehicles, used by the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and early EVs worldwide. Its large round connector delivers DC power and supports two-way charging.
Example: The older Leaf only takes CHAdeMO, and those plugs are disappearing from new charging stations.
Usage notes
The name is usually explained as an abbreviation of "CHArge de MOve" and a pun on the Japanese phrase "o cha demo ikaga desuka," "how about some tea while charging." The standard was established by a Japanese association in 2010. CHAdeMO is fading outside Japan as CCS and NACS dominate.
