BEV stands for Battery electric vehicle, an automotive abbreviation also used in science.

Vehicle powered solely by a rechargeable battery pack and electric motors, with no gasoline engine. BEVs produce no tailpipe emissions and are charged from home outlets, wall boxes or public fast chargers.

Example: The new BEV has 300 miles of EPA-rated range and charges from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes.

Usage notes

Used in industry and policy documents to distinguish pure electrics from hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles, which also use electric motors. The Tesla Model Y was the world's best-selling car of any type in 2023. Battery prices fell by roughly 90 percent between 2010 and the early 2020s, making BEVs competitive with gasoline cars.
