CVT stands for Continuously variable transmission, an automotive abbreviation.
Automatic transmission with no fixed gears, typically using a steel belt or chain running between two variable-diameter pulleys to provide an infinite range of ratios. CVTs keep the engine at its most efficient speed and are common in Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Honda models.
Example: The CVT feels a bit like a rubber band when you floor it, but it gets great mileage.
Usage notes
The Dutch DAF Variomatic, introduced in 1958, was the first CVT in a mass-produced car. Drivers sometimes dislike the droning "motorboat" sound as engine speed stays constant while the car accelerates, so many CVTs now simulate stepped shifts. Toyota's hybrids use a planetary-gear "eCVT," which works differently from belt CVTs.
