CUV stands for Crossover utility vehicle, an automotive abbreviation.
SUV-style vehicle built on a car's unibody platform rather than a truck frame, giving lighter weight, better fuel economy and a smoother ride. Models such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Tesla Model Y are among the best-selling vehicles in the world.
Example: The CUV gets 30 mpg on the highway and still fits two car seats and a stroller.
Usage notes
Usually just called a "crossover." The 1994 Toyota RAV4 and 1995 Honda CR-V helped create the segment. Marketers often label crossovers SUVs, and the line between the two has blurred; regulators generally treat both as light trucks. Few crossovers offer low-range gearing or serious off-road ability.
