DCT stands for Dual-clutch transmission, an automotive abbreviation.

Automated gearbox with two clutches, one for odd and one for even gears, so the next gear is preselected and shifts happen in milliseconds without interrupting power. DCTs are used in performance cars and many compact cars for efficiency.

Example: Paddle shifts on the DCT are instant, but it can be jerky creeping in traffic.

Usage notes

Volkswagen brought the first mass-production DCT, its DSG, to market in 2003 in the Golf R32. Porsche calls its version PDK, and other makers use their own names. Low-speed shudder and wear in dry-clutch versions have been a common complaint. Racing dual-clutch systems were developed in the 1980s.
