PHEV stands for Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, an automotive abbreviation also used in science.
Hybrid with a larger battery that can be charged from an outlet or charger, allowing typically 20 to 50 miles or more of electric-only driving before the gasoline engine takes over. PHEVs suit drivers with short commutes and occasional long trips.
Example: With the PHEV I do my whole daily commute on electricity and only buy gas for road trips.
Usage notes
Real-world emissions depend heavily on how often owners plug in; studies in Europe found many company-car PHEVs were rarely charged. The 2010 Chevrolet Volt, marketed as an extended-range EV, was an early mass-market example. PHEVs may qualify for EV incentives in some countries. EPA window stickers show both electric range and gasoline fuel economy.
