CEL stands for Check engine light, an automotive abbreviation.
Amber dashboard warning lamp, usually shaped like an engine, that lights when the vehicle's computer detects a fault in the engine or emissions system. A steady light means service soon; a flashing light signals a severe misfire.
Example: The CEL came on right after I filled up, and it turned out the gas cap wasn't clicked tight.
Usage notes
The official regulatory name is malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). A loose fuel cap can trigger the light through the evaporative emissions system. Driving with a flashing CEL risks overheating and destroying the catalytic converter. Many parts stores will read the stored codes for free.
