1. Austria
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Austria's code, AT, avoids confusion with AU (Australia), a mix-up common enough that Austrian souvenirs joke There are no kangaroos in Austria. Vienna is the capital, alpha-3 is AUT, and Austrian VAT numbers begin ATU.
Example: Austrian IBANs start with AT and contain 20 characters.
The .at domain is also used for English word plays such as meet.at. Austria's international vehicle sign is A. Austria joined the EU in 1995 and uses the euro.
2. Automatic transmission
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Transmission that changes gears without driver input, traditionally using a torque converter and planetary gear sets. On classified ads and spec sheets, AT distinguishes automatic models from manual (MT) versions.
Example: 2018 Civic EX, AT, 42,000 miles, one owner, no accidents.
Modern conventional automatics have eight, nine or ten speeds. Fewer than 2 percent of new cars sold in the US come with a manual, whereas manuals remain common in Europe and Asia, though declining. Spec sheets may write "8AT" for an eight-speed automatic. US driving tests can be taken in automatic cars without restriction, unlike in the UK.
3. Annual training
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Period of active-duty training, usually two weeks a year, that members of the National Guard and reserves complete in addition to monthly drill weekends, often at a large training area away from home.
Example: Our AT this year is three weeks at the National Training Center in California.
The traditional commitment for Guard and Reserve members is "one weekend a month, two weeks a year," though deployments and extra training often exceed it. In the Navy, AT is also the aviation electronics technician rating.
4. Aviation Electronics Technician
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Avionics specialists who maintain aircraft radar, communication, navigation, identification, electronic warfare and weapons-control electronics, working at squadron level or in intermediate maintenance shops that repair components with automated test equipment.
Example: AT1 Benson isolated the radar fault to a single circuit card in the intermediate shop.
ATs are among the most technical aviation ratings and need a high ASVAB electronics score. Do not confuse with the Navy rating AE, which covers electrical power, or with "AT" in reserve usage, which means annual training. Many ATs move into civilian avionics careers.
5. Astatine (At)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
The rarest naturally occurring element, astatine (element 85) exists in Earth's crust only fleetingly, estimated at under a gram at any moment, as it forms and decays within uranium and thorium decay chains. Astatine-211 is being studied for targeted alpha therapy against cancer.
Example: The cyclotron produces At-211 by bombarding bismuth targets with alpha particles.
Dale Corson, Kenneth MacKenzie and Emilio Segrè made astatine in 1940 at Berkeley by bombarding bismuth with alpha particles. The name comes from Greek astatos (unstable), since no isotope lasts longer than about eight hours. A visible sample has never been assembled because it would vaporize from its own radioactive heat.
