1. Army Fitness Test
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
US Army physical fitness test of record that replaced the ACFT in 2025. It keeps five events: the three-repetition maximum deadlift, hand-release push-up, sprint-drag-carry, plank and two-mile run; the standing power throw was dropped.
Example: Her unit takes the AFT next month, so she has been adding sprint-drag-carry drills to PT.
A key change from the ACFT is a higher, sex-neutral standard for soldiers in combat specialties, while other soldiers are scored on age- and sex-based tables. Like its predecessor, it is scored per event and the results feed into promotion points. Not to be confused with AFT, the American Federation of Teachers.
2. American Federation of Teachers
Organizations & Companies · Professional Association and Labor Union Abbreviations
Second-largest US teachers' union, representing teachers, paraprofessionals, school-related personnel, higher education faculty, nurses and public employees, with about 1.8 million members. It is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
Example: The AFT local reached a contract with the district after a three-day strike.
Founded in Chicago in 1916, it grew under Albert Shanker, who led the United Federation of Teachers in New York and then the AFT. Its largest local, the UFT in New York City, represents city public school teachers. It is generally more urban than the larger NEA.
3. After (aft.)
Writing & Everyday · Genealogy Abbreviations
Indicates that an event happened after a given date, as in "d. aft. 1820," when a genealogist knows only that a person was alive at a certain point.
Example: Died aft. 1820, the last year he appears on the county tax list.
GEDCOM uses AFT for this modifier. Combining bef. and aft. evidence narrows a range, which can then be written with bet. (between). Tax lists, censuses and church records supply the "last seen alive" evidence behind many aft. dates.
