CategoriesTechnology & Computing

802.11ac stands for IEEE 802.11ac (Very High Throughput Wi-Fi), a telecom abbreviation.

Wi-Fi standard approved in 2013, later branded Wi-Fi 5, that operates in the 5 GHz band with wider channels of up to 160 MHz and 256-QAM modulation. Second-wave devices added downlink MU-MIMO.

Example: The 2016 router supports 802.11ac, so it still offers decent speeds for streaming.

Usage notes

Routers were marketed with combined figures such as "AC1900", adding the maximum rates of all bands. 802.11ac works only at 5 GHz; dual-band routers handle older 2.4 GHz devices using 802.11n. It was the most widely deployed Wi-Fi standard for much of the 2010s.
